Ever since we found the property on the internet we were looking forward to relaxing in the various spaces that have been created. The house architecturally striking and it was the main reason we chose to visit Lovina. However arriving at the villa we found it was not ready. The house keeper was not dressed, relaxing with her laptop computer, the TV was on and washing was drying. Upon entering we immediately noticed how un-kept the gardens appeared with weeds growing through the paved areas and numerous bottle-tops and cigarette butts scattered through-out. The attractive statue of a large bird near the pool had a black plastic bag stuffed in it, which had been there for so long, when I removed it, it virtually disintegrated. The elephant near the large day bed had and old pool tester sample bottle wedged in it’s trunk and it was disappointing to see green plastic buckets used as plant pots. (Considering the talented artistic people in Bali and the large range of pots available). We wanted to be positive and enjoy our precious holiday so we went to relax on the day bed, it was then we realized it was infested with large red biting ants, which made relaxing impossible. We are also visited several times by a white and ginger cat that seemed very much at home, the housekeeper said it was not from here even though there was a pet bowl. We constantly had to shoo it away, because my wife is allergic to cats. We then went to see if the housekeeper had removed her laptop so we could relax inside but when we sat in front of the TV at eye level with the furniture we saw everything from old bic razors, sticky tape dispensers to large broken pieces of glass. As visually stunning as the home is we could not help but notice how dirty it was. Alarm bells had now started to go off that we were not in a home that strives to for excellence in hospitality. The sofas were rusty, and there were cobwebs everywhere, not just in high up places but at eye level around the speakers and sofas. Everywhere we touched felt dirty, ornaments and lights had months and months of dead bugs accumulated in them. Wanting to stay we thought we would do a little housework ourselves, removing any dirty objects to an unseen area and cleaning places we intended to sit. It was then we found the white vase with a single dead leaf arrangement and in its base to our horror were cigarette butts soaking in water which made had clearly been there for sometime. In fact all of the pot plants outside had also become ash tray with each and every plant being heavily littered with cigarette butts. It felt like the previous occupants of the home had left about an hour before we arrived leaving their belongings and mess or a a large party had just occurred and no one had bothered to clean up…..Not Even for the Paying Guests. We did not feel welcome at all. Other things that lacked attention to detail were things such as missing light bulbs, pool clarity, no lock on the front door etc The Villa is striking but no matter how many design awards a property wins no one wants to pay good money to stay in a dirty home. My wife and I have always believed it is the little things that make a difference and it did not seem that primary focus of the villa was to be rented out to paying guests ensuring they have a wonderful time. We all make mistakes and have bad days and no place is perfect but before you book ask the owners if the place has had a good clean recently... and if you are not happy with the standard of clean what is his policy to rectify it.
Owner Response: The property had been thoroughly cleaned as is usual, and there were 2 staff members there to look after the 2 guests. They were willing to make any adjustments requested. The guests left early without making any complaint, and in an email agreed that the accommodation had been provided as agreed. Then a week later the email campaign of complaints commenced. We have a proud record of over 50 vacation rentals without complaints, and are pleased that many bookings are previous guests returning.
