In our party: son and his girlfriend, our daughter and two granddaughters (SIL had to work) and my husband and I. We had a great time, the house is great, the pool was nice and access to the beach was wonderful. A few details: There is no longer a front porch, it has been enclosed to enlarge living area to include a table with four chairs. Don't expect anyone to sleep on the couch, it has to be the most uncomfortable on the planet. The kitchen knives are extremely dull, we had trouble preparing the fresh fish we got at the fish market and cutting veggies. The dryer doesn't shut itself off, so don't leave beach towels in it and go to bed like we did. Each room has an airconditioner and as long as you make sure the shutters are closed in the bedrooms and bathrooms, they cool well. If you go out the gate to the beach and turn left, great snorkeling is about a 10 minute walk by the big rocks. I also have to recommend Belly Button's for dinner on Thursdays. They have Mexican night and the pulled pork and pulled chicken are fabulous and we are from Texas so we are picky about BBQ and Mexican food.
Barefoot Bungalow Rating: 5 out of 5 Respond to Review Miller MD Review Submitted Date of Stay June 4, 2011 My family recently returning from staying in this clean and comfortable barefoot bungalow. The view of the ocean from the covered porch is outstanding. We enjoyed the wonderful pool framed by hibiscus trees and the cottage is well equiped for cooking and relaxing. We ate at the cottage almost every night including getting fresh fish and lobster. The house manager was very accomodating and I hope someday that we can return. It was a very nice vacation and the beaches in Vieques are beautiful Recommended for: Adventure Seekers , Families with Teenagers , Families with Young Children , Romantic Getaway Helpful votes: 0/0
Rating: 5 out of 5 Respond to Review Jonathan Houston, TX The vacation was everything and more than we hoped it would be. The island and beaches are absolutely beautiful, and the people we met were great! The bungalow was outstanding. We love the location of it, and the views from the patio are unforgettable. Grilling outside around dusk was just awesome! If I were to have any criticism on the bungalow (and this is a small thing) it would be the bathrooms. Maybe an update would be nice. The shower head in the bathroom to the right needs to be replaced or cleaned. Other than that, the place was great! We loved the pool, and really enjoyed eating breakfast each morning on the porch looking out to sea. The house was very clean and in good order. All of the linens were clean and ready to go when we arrive. The pool was also very clean (if we weren't in the ocean, we were in the pool.) Thanks so much for the pina colada mix. We put it to good use! The beaches on the island were the main attraction. We were on the beach everyday and loved it! Aurelio is the man! I'm telling you, that guy is worth his weight in gold! He was there at the airport when we arrived, and was happy to answer any questions we had and was very good about explaining the area around the house to us. We got lost coming back to the house the first night. It was dark and the lack of street signs made it impossible to find the bungalow. We called him to guide us back and he was very patient with us. After unsuccessfully finding the bungalow still, Aurelio of nice enough to guide us to a landmark, come meet us and drive us back to the bungalow. I'm sure he had better things to do on a Sunday evening :) He also got the dish tv fix while we were there, and was nice enough to get us some fresh fish to grill. I really can't say enough about him! Our vacation was wonderful, and we WILL be returning. Thank you so much for letting us stay at your bungalow. It was a blast!
Rating: Respond to Review Karla Minneapolis,MN Review Submitted Date of Stay April 2, 2011 My family had a wonderful stay at this house by the sea. The view is spectacular, the neighborhood and beach are very quiet and the house is quite suitable for a family of five. I especially appreciated the comfortable beds with nice quality pillows and sheets. The owners and caretaker were very helpful before and during our stay. Vieques is a great destination. The beaches on the south side of the island are amazing and the horses roaming the island are quite fun. The Bio Bay is a 'must experience'. I hope to book a return visit sometime.
Respond to Review Danny Martin Iowa Review Submitted Date of Stay January 15, 2011 Our party of 4 had a great week in Vieques, our 2nd stay on the island. There's nothing like nearly deserted beaches and bays to snorkel and swim. We bought groceries locally and the house had all the hardware to grill and cook with. We went on an all day sailing excursion. Our house was the relaxing home base for all our activites. Be sure you have a car to get around. We were in the ocean in front of the house within an hour of arrival and couldn't get over the sights and sounds of the ocean. Since we traveled lightly, we enjoyed the washer & drier. The pool was a cool break and an quiet place to watch iguanas and crabs. The local manager went above and beyond helping us with our rental car pickup. We are recommending the cottage for 2 couples or families with children and will consider returning in the future. Thanks for a memorable week in the sun.
Respond to Review Eleonor Alfredsson Puerto Rico Review Submitted Date of Stay November 19, 2010 Took my family and in-laws from Sweden for a November break during Thanksgiving weekend. We had a wonderful time and were pleasantly surprised that the house actually looked as seen on the pictures. The bedrooms were fantastic and the bedlinen felt as a 5 star hotell experience. The cleanliness of the house was great and the kids enjoyed the pool at the back. Would love to come back here again, the view was amazing and the breeze from the ocean is something to remember during cold winter months in Sweden. We had some problems with our rental car but the property manager, Aurelio, always helped us out. Aurelio also met us at the airport at our arrival and gave us excellent introduction to the islands restaurants and beaches-many thanks. During the days we went to explore the beaches and during the night we tried some of the restaurants of Esperanza. However, the biggest memory will be the Bio-Bay-fantastic! Hope to see be able to visit this wonderful place again very soon, thanks for a great experience!
Kristen Smith East Greenwich. RI Review Submitted Date of Stay May 1, 2010 This cottage is great! It's located in a neighborhood just outside Isabel II, so you are close to the town for all the amenities, but also close to the great beaches on the Southern part of the island. The kitchen is well stocked and roomy to work in and all the bedrooms are a good size. Having the washer/dryer, beach towels, lawn chairs, cooler and beach toys are a definite plus! The house is very neat and the pool in the back is great for the afternoons when you've had enough sun, but the kids still want to swim. The beach out front is pretty to walk along also. With the alarm system and the safe, we felt very safe. The entire house is very private. HIghly recommended!
We had a very nice time at your beach rental. It was perfect - liked the decor, the bed was very comfortable & the location was great. We appreciated having satellite & free phone service. We hung out in the pool a lot or down at the beach with our coffee in the morning or wine at night. We snorkeled there twice. It was VERY hot, but we didn't use the AC. We preferred cooling off in the pool then using the ceiling fan, so we could still listen to the ocean & night-time sounds! The weather turned out to be perfect. A little stormy the first day when we arrived, as remnants of TS Erika were still lingering. After a little shower Sunday afternoon, the only other rain occurred a couple evenings after dark. We loved the beaches & couldn't believe how empty they were. Our favorite was Navio - we used the "boogie boards" there. Blue Beach was very pretty, but we just stopped by there to take pictures. The biobay was amazing! We used Abe's & kayaked out to the middle. There was just one other couple & no one else around. A little lightening off in the distance, but an otherwise calm evening. We loved all the little lizards & saw the iguanas a couple times around the pool. Very cool! Thanks again for allowing us to visit your lovely home! We wish you all the best with your investment & hope to visit again someday!
This was the best place to be on the island. It was the perfect home for the six of us to share. It was right on the beach so you could hear the waves 24/7. The beach in front was great for walking in the morning and evening. The pool was refreshing with a beautiful array of plants surrounding it. This house had all the amenities needed to make you feel at home. Some of the world's best beaches are on this island within close distance to this house. There were six of us in this house for a week and we never felt it was too crowded for all of us. We hope to return one day.
AWESOME..is the view..as well the house..as well as the island. We hit all the beaches that were open to the public, we took pictures of the horses even having one stick his nose right in my car window. The Blue Caribe kayak tour was good but the night was too light to really get the full effect. All the places we at were really good, our favorite was Belly Buttons, and Tradewinds friday night for the lobster. We do recommend flying over verses the fairy, though we took the fairy, we had a 2 hour wait on the evening trip. We also found out that the local airline is cheaper than Cape Air. Then there are the bakerys in town...need I say More. All in all it was a great week another one to add to our scrapbook. Thanks Mike and Gail and Thanks to the care takers Paul & Ricci. Paul gave us lots of good info.
This place was everything I hoped for and more. Like one of the other reviews stated, it's very hard to research a rental solely based on online photo's and reviews, especially if you've never been to the island before. I must have spent hours reading reviews and doing research before I felt confident on booking Casita del Sol y Mar. After talking with the owners all doubts went out the window. They were very friendly to answer any questions I had and the grueling countdown to vacation began. When we arrived on the Island Paul escorted us to the house where he was eager to show us the in's and out's of the property and the island itself. A very warm touch was to be greeted by a welcome basket so that no time is wasted mixing up some Pina Coladas. The property is very well maintained with lush plants and modest but very comfortable bedding/furniture. Having 6 people in the house was never a problem mostly because most of your time is spent outdoors anyway. The beach access from the fornt yard was great! It's not a very large beach so it seemed that most of the people that had access were the neighboring homes which made it very secluded. I would reccomend some water shoes if you plan on going in the water in front of the house because there are quite a bit of sharp rocks and spiny creatures. But the plus side is, this gave way to some great snorkeling right in your front yard! I would say a car is a must because it seems like every place we went on the island was so different and worth checking out. This place is perfect for families, couples, or in my case friend reunions. I can't wait to book again next year and hopefully make this an annual place to stay!
I traveled to Vieques at the beginning of March with three girlfriends. We found this house online and were admittedly a little nervous that the property wouldn't live up to it's website and photos. However, once we stepped foot into the house, we forgot all of our concerns. The house exceeded our expectations -- great beachfront location, comfortable beds and linens, ample towels, washer/dryer, fully stocked kitchen, and great beach amenities like chairs, umbrella, and cooler. We really couldn't have asked for anything more. The house managers even had a welcome basket waiting for us when we arrived with all of the ingredients for pina coladas and coffee the next morning. What else could we ask for? This was our first visit to Vieques and were unfamiliar with the area and the beaches. The only thing for future guests to keep in mind is that you can't swim at the beach behind the house b/c it is too rocky and you must get a car b/c taxi service on the island is virtually non existent. All in all, we had an amazing stay and would return to this house in a heartbeat.
Our family decided early last summer to take a vacation together for our first ever Christmas away from Missouri. We planned a trip to Vieques and San Juan - hoping to get a good feel for life in Puerto Rico. Finding the Casita Del Sol Y Mar turned out to be a perfect match for us. Our contacts with Michael and Gail were amazing. I still love hearing from them. Paul and Ricci, the caretakers, answered many questions before our arrival, then greeted us at the airport and got us settled in. Getting to Vieques from LA, St. Louis and Chicago wasn't easy, but oh so worth the effort. The house was just what was expected - roomy enough for five adults, equipped with everything we needed, including a lovely welcome basket of goodies. The location is convenient, but a car is a must. We could have easily stayed right in the neighborhood for a full week just enjoying the secluded nature of the property, the beach, pool, front porch and hammock! The house and surroundings were ideal for our three adult children. The casita felt even more like home, due to a precious dog that visited us every day and may have been sleeping over on the front porch. The island offers more than we dreamed possible. Snorkeling, people and horse watching, fun bars and restaurants and the beaches. Should we reveal that Orchid was our favorite? It is a gorgeous beach, good snorkeling - take food and water with you as you'll want to stay all day. The ultimate experience is a trip to the Bio-Bay. We booked a private "tour" with three canoes and a delightful guide. When the darkness settles in, the magic truly begins. Once you experience the Bay, you'll remember it for a lifetime. Vieques Island did indeed give us a feel for the laid back "island life". The Casita was the perfect "home away" from home in every way. We'll never forget our short time there, but certainly hope to return.
We are a family of 5 who enjoyed having the pool, good sized yard, and direct access to the beach. The beds were very comfortable and having both the pool to relax in and the air conditioning in the bedrooms after a warm day was great. The house is well provisioned for cooking which saved us from eating all of our meals out. While not on the side of the island where the choicest beaches are, it is an easy 10/15 minute ride to those beaches, and the main town with the most dining and store options is only a couple of minutes away by car. Having the beach chairs to take with us was great. Overall Vieques is a somewhat "rustic" location without any traffic lights, high rises, traffic jams, crowds, shopping, beach peddlers, etc. (but lots of other "wild domesticated animals" was exactly what we were looking for. And it is a fun place to practice your Spanish! Don't be in a hurry to get there or to leave, but the boat ride once you are underway is a scenic way to spend an hour and a half.
We rented this house based on the gorgeous pictures of the view and we were not disappointed. In person, it is absolutely breathtaking to see the surf, hear the surf and through the beautiful palms in the Gordon's back yard. It was this single factor that most quickly transported us into our vacation. Awaking in the morning and looking out, and going to sleep at night hearing the surf was just amazing. The house was more than adequate for our needs. The Gordon's are property owners who really care and were very responsive via email throughout the entire process. This lent an a level of security to renting a place over the internet. They returned our security deposit in a timely manner as well. I took a lot of long walks from the house into the surrounding neighborhoods and loved all the sights and sounds of the island, with roosters crowing, dogs, horses, iguanas, etc. Vieques is an authentic and charming island. If you are looking for a Lilly Pulitzer vibe this is probably not your place but if you are looking for a very low key and "real" experience, this is it. The beaches were amazing. Our favorite was Media Luna. You can get all over the island in a short amount of time. A car is necessary no matter where you stay. We also liked taking walks on the Gordon's beach right outside the door. As others mentioned, it is not swimmable, but our friend found a little fishing whole down to the right and saw major fish! We walked toward the left and collected a lot of really cool coral and shells washed up on the beach which I shipped home via US Mail (the other nice thing about being in Vieques - you are in the US and thus have access to things but honestly feels like you are a million miles away from the US). I think for the price, the Gordon's cottage is a very good value. It has a million dollar view! and is comfortable inside and offers a pool as well, which our kids loved. The bathrooms could use a little bit of updating but for island living it was fine. Rent with confidence!.
We stayed here with our kids (5 & 2) for a week. This was our 2nd visit to Vieques but our 1st stay in Isabella II. (Previously we stayed in Esperanza w/o a car, so we were looking forward to exploring other areas & beaches.) We had a very pleasant stay in the Casita, but I am surprised to see how many 5 star reviews the home has gotten. To me, 5 stars means an impeccable property with no issues. I cannot honestly say this is true and my review below details why. (I'll let you read the other reviews to hear about the positives.) Upon arrival, the property manager Paul brought us to the home and showed us around. He was very nice, but spent a little too much time empasizing the importance of the home's security system. This left us feeling nervous, especially because the road leading into the home is a little run down with several homes in a very bad state of disrepair. This is normal many parts of the Carribean, but this combined with Paul's ADT-101 lecture plus the owners' warnings in the home's welcome binder left us feeling uncertain. By the time we had left, we really felt a lot of this was overdone, but unfortunately it really let the wind out of our sails on that first night. The house itself is great with a nice kitchen and yard and comfortable beds. The photos on this site show its best features. The bathrooms were clean and had plenty of hot water. They are island "chic" with pink tiles & fixtures. The rest of the house was clean too, but I found shards from a previously broken glass under the kitchen island and counters. There are no dressers in the house, so we were not able to fully unpack and lived 1/2 out of our suitcases for the week we were there. Oddly missing is a clothesline. We put one up but it was promptly taken down by the property managers when we left. They felt it was a liability and security risk, which I did not understand since the yard is fenced and the gate is locked. The pool was clean and warm, but there were a few loose/broken tiles on the far side which were sharp. We had to keep our kids away from these. The yard was great but the porch is not screened and there are crazy bugs at night. One evening we were able to eat outdoors before sunset, but the next night the picnic table was attacked by flies as soon as we took our hot dogs off the grill. We ended up having to move inside. Overall, the property is a safe choice. It is not luxurious, but comfortable, safe and well equipped.
