Built just prior to prohibition by a Superior, Wisconsin brewer,
this Cabin is part of a 65 acre estate. One of the first cabins built
on Upper Eau Claire Lake; it sits in front of some of the best fishing
in the area. Upper Eau Claire Lake is considered one of the premier
lakes in the region and renowned as one of the top three most
desirable lakes along with Lake Owen and Namekagon. Upper Eau Claire
connects to four other lakes via small navigable channels and is over
1000 acres large and 90 feet deep. Local lore tells of the original
owner falling on hard times due to prohibition and the Estate being
used as both a luxury “speak easy” and the transshipment point for
smuggled Canadian whiskey to Chicago gangsters. The second owner was
a prosperous ship yard owner from Superior Wisconsin and much of the
improvements and development was achieved by him to “industrial”
standards. The rental cabin is known as the Gatehouse and was
originally occupied by the caretakers and as legend has it, the
security men allowing passage into the estate during prohibition. The
cabin has 2 bedrooms (sleeps 4), one bath, kitchen and living room. It
comes with a 16 foot Alumni Craft boat with oars for rowing and a
private dock. The Gate house is located approximately 20 miles east
of Solon Springs, WI and 30 miles north of Hayward, WI.
