The Little Sugar River Farm is a beautiful vacation rental on a small farm 2.5 hours north of Chicago. This is a quiet place in the rural Midwest for people who enjoy nature's beauty, architectural excellence, and home-cooked meals prepared with produce from the garden. Retreat from the stresses of urban life to a place of privacy, quiet, luxury, and hand-crafted quality. The setting is secluded and peaceful, on a small organic farm surrounded by 1900 acres of wildlife refuge. In 2000, the house received an Honor Award from the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The house is designed in an open, modern style. All materials are of excellent quality, hand-crafted of local cherry and oak. The Little Sugar River Farm is an evolving, small-scale organic farm with gardens, greenhouses, berries, an orchard, honeybees, free-range chickens, and a prairie. You can help with farm activities or simply relax. With a commercial kitchen completed, we can cook meals for guests, taking advantage of the delicious flavors of fresh, organic, local ingredients. Guests are also welcome to cook for themselves. Hiking, birding, picking and eating home-grown fruits and vegetables, fishing, canoeing, and cycling are available. We provide bikes for the bike trail, and a canoe and kayaks for the nearby rivers. Guests are welcome to help themselves to the bounty of the fields and greenhouses during their stay, and are free to take flowers and produce home with them. Feed the free-range chickens, collect eggs, help with making honey, or relax. Golf, flyfishing and swimming are a few minutes away. Excellent restaurants, museums, and art galleries are nearby in the Swiss village of New Glarus and the historic settlement of Mineral Point. Winter stays offer ice-skating on the pond, snowshoeing, or relaxing by the woodstove. Visit Taliesin, the home and workshop of Frank Lloyd Wright, swim in the Wisconsin River, and watch Shakespeare in the outdoor American Players Theater. The charming town of New Glarus is nearby, and the Sugar River Bike Trail is just off the farm. But most people come up from Chicago or Milwaukee purely to relax.
